Balázs Beöthy: Beta Tours, 1997

“Beta Tours” is an online artwork that delves into the dynamics of personal connections and user interaction within a digital framework. The piece centers around a list of names, presented in a manner reminiscent of end credits, representing individuals who have influenced the protagonist’s life during the intervals between the creation of paired photographs. This design encourages users to engage with the work by searching for specific names, prompting reflections on personal relationships and the nature of online exploration. Each name is associated with a color code that signifies the nature of the relationship, adding a layer of interpretive depth. The interface incorporates a visual element inspired by a historical computer virus, which, from a contemporary perspective, appears relatively harmless. This choice serves as a commentary on the evolution of digital aesthetics and the shifting perceptions of online threats. Notably, Beöthy periodically alters the accessibility of “Beta Tours,” sometimes restricting access and at other times making it publicly available, thereby emphasizing the transient and mutable nature of digital art and online content.
