Internet art and Internet culture in Hungary in the 1990s and 2000s. A research project by Flóra Barkóczi

Zoltán Szegedy-Maszák – Márton Fernezelyi: SeeThrough, 2004

The artwork “SeeThrough” consists of three identical installations placed in distant public spaces, each featuring a video display, touch screen, and camera connected via broadband internet. Live video from each location is layered in a virtual space, with the top layer showing the local scene, which can be made transparent by drawing on the touch screen, revealing live feeds from other locations. This interaction creates a shared “image space,” where users at different locations can see through to each other based on their drawings. The project invites public participation, allowing people to erase their own live image and reveal remote locations, creating a collaborative and ever-changing video experience. Originally developed for an exhibition in 2003, the installations have been updated with improved hardware and software for better video quality and performance.
