Pocket TV, curated by Balázs Beöthy, is a Flash-based digital art project featuring video works by ten Hungarian artists (EIKE, Gábor Gerhes, Tamás Komoróczky, Kriszta Nagy, Hajnal Németh, Zsuzsanna Rebeka Pál, JÁnos Sugár, Péter Szarka, gyula Várnai, Tibor Várnagy). Created during a pivotal moment in Hungary’s media history, the work reflects on the transformative shifts of the 1990s. Before the change of regime, Hungary had only a single television channel. By 1996, the emergence of commercial TV channels began reshaping the media landscape, while the rise of the internet promised to revolutionize television culture, sparking hopes for interactive, participatory formats. In this context, Pocket TV bridges traditional video art with early internet technologies, offering a compact, interactive experience through Flash. The project encapsulates the experimental energy of the time, exploring new ways to engage with audiovisual content in an era of rapid technological change and burgeoning media diversity.
