Internet access in the 1990s was characterized by its limitations. Besides the relatively high subscription fees, users had to cope with the slowness of network connections and the resulting communication difficulties. Visual content creation was also much more limited, and images could only be published online in small sizes, still resulting long loading times. Ágnes Eperjesi’s VRML statistics, reflecting the difficulties of internet access, visualized the time spent by individual users loading the current artwork in the form of virtual spatial bar charts. The juxtaposition of the columns metaphorically represent a “metropolis” of users, showing the interconnectedness and diversity of the network’s community.
