Internet art and Internet culture in Hungary in the 1990s and 2000s. A research project by Flóra Barkóczi

János Sugár: Document Model, 1997

János Sugár’s work Document Model combines recordings of a public camera from 1987 with the artist’s audio messages from 1990, which the visitor can access by verbal participation through the website starting with an X and an Y – as two unknowns of this specific coordinate system. The words compiled by the visitors are entered into a shared database, making the work a collective knowledge repository. By evoking the spectator-attitude of the early days of Internet use, the work focuses on the accumulation of knowledge and the importance of its contextuality.
