Zsolt Veress (Csaba Nemes) – Szépfalvi Ágnes: Common Name / A comics about the tragic love story between an artist who works at an amusement park and a media art curator, 1996

Presented in the format of an online comic, the online work tells the story of Francisco, an artist working in an amusement park, and Mariella, a media art curator, whose romantic relationship turns tragic when they discover that they share the same father. The comic was created as part of the conceptual project “Common Name”, initiated through a contractual agreement between artists Csaba Nemes and Zsolt Veress in 1995 to exchange names for artistic purposes. By legally and symbolically destabilizing personal identity, the project challenged conventional understandings of artistic authorship and individuality, while the web-based comic translated these concerns into a fragmented narrative shaped by mediation, fiction, and role-playing. In this context, Beneath its melodramatic narrative, the online work reflects on similar questions, such as identity, authorship, and constructed subjectivity – especially in the emerging digital era.
