Internet art and Internet culture in Hungary in the 1990s and 2000s. A research project by Flóra Barkóczi

György Galántai: Uni/vers(;), 1997

The UNI/vers(;) website was created to reinterpret Guillermo Deisler’s PeaceDream bookwork series (1987–1995), an assembling-anthology of mail art and visual poetry composed of reorderable pages. In the original bookwork (available in Artpool’s collection), the sequence of pages could be continuously rearranged by the reader, making interpretation and context formation an open and participatory process. Inspired by this structure, György Galántai translated the work into the digital environment by creating an online version in which the scanned pages were divided into multiple clickable zones marked by hyperlinks. Through these links, visitors could navigate the material in constantly shifting, random sequences, virtually “turning the pages” in unpredictable ways. The project transformed the experience of the original analogue publication into an interactive web-based environment, emphasizing non-linear reading, user participation, and the internet’s potential for open-ended associative structures.
