Gyula Várnai: Anamorphosis, 1996

“Anamorphosis” is a VRML-based online artwork that reimagines the optical phenomenon of anamorphosis in virtual space. Traditionally involving distorted images that become coherent from specific viewpoints, Várnai scales this concept to immersive, architectural proportions, transforming virtual urban landscapes into interactive experiences. The work positions the viewer as the focal point, where the anamorphic image surrounds and fills their visual field. As the viewer navigates the virtual space, the cohesive image breaks apart into abstract forms, emphasizing perspective, spatial perception, and the dynamic relationship between observer and environment.
