Eszter Ágnes Szabó: Leonardo Cry and Laugh, 1996

Eszter Ágnes Szabó’s “Leonardo Cry and Laugh” is an interactive online artwork exploring the themes of binary oppositions and hypertextuality. The piece features Leonardo da Vinci’s face, where clicking on the right eye leads to a page displaying the word “crying,” while the left eye directs the viewer to a page showing “laughing.” This gesture of “one eye crying, the other laughing” not only reflects the duality of human emotions but also subtly alludes to how Leonardo might respond to artworks created in the context of hypertextuality — simultaneously appreciating the possibilities of the new medium while critically reflecting on the transformations it brings.
