Demedusator is a collaborative virtual world, developed by its users, which builds upon the concepts introduced in Zoltán Szegedy-Maszák’s earlier work, Cryptogram. In the Demedusator project, visitors can upload multimedia files such as images, sounds, and videos, which are transformed into encrypted 3D sculptures using the Cryptogram system. These sculptures, known as “Cryptograms,” obscure the original content, and users can interact with them by “touching” the sculptures to decode and view the underlying media.
Unlike traditional interactive environments, Demedusator focuses on creative contributions rather than predefined materials. Users can explore the virtual world and enrich it by adding their own creations, which are stored in a database and displayed in the 3D space as encrypted objects. This system ensures that the virtual world remains accessible by loading only necessary content, overcoming the issue of large multimedia files slowing down the system. The project offers a dynamic, decentralized space where individuals contribute to a shared, evolving environment, emphasizing the exploration of meaning and content rather than immediate communication or predefined aesthetics. By using Cryptogram’s encryption system, Demedusator transforms the virtual space into a “living” city-like world where visitors can discover, decode, and create, offering a novel way to engage with the intersection of media, art, and technology.
